Coming, as it does, after the Somnium Scipionis, the catabasis in the Aeneid shows an original interdependency between a vision of the Hereafter and the stoic ideal of “civic hero” applied to the distinguished characters of Roman history. The intertextual relationship notwithstanding, there are profound differences between both texts, on the one hand because of the Greek literary models that inspired them, on the other hand because of the variable emphasis from the three principal philosophical and religious currents, also present in Stoicism: orphismpythagoreanism, dualism and astral mysticism, the reception of which the present article seeks to analyse.eng
