The nineteenth-century division of archaic Greek lyric into “choral lyric” and “monody” implies a number of problems that have been debated since Wilamowitz suggested that Pindar’s Olympians I and II might have been composed for solo performance. I review some of the evidence on which the problem rests and conclude that it would be artificial to do away with term “choral lyric”.eng
