The aim of this paper is to analyse the most important poetical epithets formed upon the word ἴον (“violet”): Focusing on Greek poetry, in its several genres, from the Homeric epic to the Hellenistic period, we try to come to some conclusions on the semantic meanings of the flower and the colour commonly associated to it, when used in such poetic compounds.
