Portugal, un azar histórico: el pasado lusitano y la historiografía de Claudio Sánchez-Albornoz

Abstract

El artículo analiza la manera en que la producción histórica portuguesa quedó reflejada en la obra del medievalista español Claudio Sánchez-Albornoz y de qué forma este autor construyó su propia imagen del pasado lusitano y la inserción de éste en el conjunto de la historia española. Junto a ello, se detalla de forma muy sintética la trayectoria de este historiador y, en particular, su traslado a la Argentina en la década de los ’40 del siglo pasado –dando origen, en ese país, a una corriente de medievalistas cuyo alcance prosigue hasta la actualidad–. Tal acápite sirve para comprender las referencias a Portugal que jalonan la evolución historiográfica específica de nuestro autor y las características que rodearon la labor intelectual de éste durante su exilio, con todos los contratiempos que ello suponía a mediados del siglo XX.

The article analyzes the way in which the Portuguese historical production was shown in the work of the Spanish medievalist Claudio Sanchez-Albornoz and in which way this author built his own portrait of the Portuguese history and the insertion of the former in the spanish historiography. Furthermore, it is explained very briefly, the career of this historian specially when he moved to Argentina in the 1940s, starting a new medievalist movement which continues to the present. These considerations are needed to understand the way in which Portugal was present in the historiographical production of the author and the main characteristics of the intelectual labour of Sanchez-Albornoz in exile, with all the difficulties its represented in the second half of the twentieth century.
