“Cidade Dos Deuses” e “Cidade Dos Homens” numa epopeia hagiográfica neolatina. O de “Patientia Christiana” de Jorge Coelho (1540)

Abstract

O presente estudo consiste numa leitura da epopeia alegórica de Jorge Coelho, De Patientia Chrístiana (1540), à luz das suas Fontes clássicas e cristãs, identificando nele quer o paradima clássico do herói quer a sua alternativa cristã: o mártir. A natureza alegórica do poema permite-nos ler profundamente uma interpretação cristã do estoicismo no séc. XVI, intimamente relacionada com as polémicas doutrinais contemporâneas. Esta interpretação vê a realização plena do humano no divino, na bíblica imagem das 'núpcias', que nesta epopeia se celebram entre a 'cidade dos homens' e a 'cidade dos deuses'.

Jorge Coelho s allegorical epopee De Patientia Chrístiana (1540) is here interpreted against the backdrop of its sources, clássica! as well as Christian. The underlying pattern is thus the clássica! hero and the Christian martyr. Moreover, the poems allegorical character shows a typical XVI century Christian interpretation of stoicism, one that is closely linked to the doctrinal polemics of that time.The thrust of the põem makes it clear that mans full aecomplishment will only happen in the divine reálm, as conveyed by the biblical image of the "marriage" taking place between the "city ofmen" and the "city of the gods".
