“Que diz a esfíngie que escolheu para suas armas?”: a Faculdade de Letras de 1911 a 1937

Abstract

O presente artigo tem em vista tecer algumas considerações acerca da Faculdade de Letras entre 1911 e 1937. Da antiga Faculdade de Teologia passaram para a de Letras, entre outros, António de Vasconcelos, que desenvolveu uma acção notável com especial atenção para a construção do novo edifício; e Mendes dos Remédios que, além de reitor eleito pela Universidade por duas vezes, sobressaiu como um dos maiores especialistas de História da Literatura. Depois outros lentes haviam de prestigiar a Faculdade de Letras nas suas diversas áreas. A contratação de vários docentes de outras faculdades e de alguns estrangeiros mereceu aos responsáveis da instituição uma atenção particular. A professora alemã D.ª Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcelos destacou- se pelos seus reconhecidos dotes intelectuais e pela vasta e valiosa bibliografia que legou. Mais tarde, Meyer-Lübke e Joseph Piel, também alemães, impuseram-se pela promoção dos estudos filológicos. Nunca será demais sublinhar o contributo dado pelos professores de outras nacionalidades que tanto dignificaram o conhecimento de várias Línguas e Culturas. Outros temas contemplados nesta colaboração referem-se às viagens de estudo ao estrangeiro; aos doutoramentos realizados que consagraram a obra científica de diversos professores nacionais e estrangeiros; e à colaboração com outras faculdades.

The aim of the present article is to give some notes about the history of the Faculty of Letters since the year of its creation in 1911 until 1937 when the University of Coimbra celebrated the 400 years of the definitive installation in this city. The new faculty substituted the Faculty of Theology and from this one moved several professors to the Faculty of Letters like its first director, António de Vasconcelos, who developed a remarkable activity not only in the scientific field but also in other aspects, mainly in the construction of the building of the new institution. An other important personality was Joaquim Mendes dos Remédios who was rector elected twice and a great specialist of history of the literature. Later he was minister of the Instruction. Other professors gave a great contribution to the progress of the Faculty of Letters in the first period of its history. Some professors came from other faculties and from foreign countries. Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcelos and Joseph Piel came from German and Meyer-Lübke from Switzerland. All were notable in the fields of the philology and literature. Famous were also some professors from Spain, Italy and other countries. In this contribution are made references to other aspects of the life of the Faculty at that time like pedagogy, the publications, the creation of institutes, the research missions, the doctorates and the collaboration with other faculties.
