Abstract: Several grammars of Latin with didactic purposes were written in the Middle Ages. One of the most known is Alexander de Villadei's Doctrinale (1190), wich became one of the most important manuals at this time. Different translations and general studies have been made from this work, but none of them analyzes the terminology used by its author. In this sense, our essay tries to study that terminology, to compare ít to the earlier and later linguistic tradition, and to' verify if its use fulfils the requirements that the scientific language must have. So, our main aim is to provide some useful data to the studies of Classic Philology as well as those of History of Linguistics.
