A água na cidade de Coimbra durante a Idade Média

Abstract

Dos quatro elementos da natureza herdados do mundo antigo, nenhum possui uma carga simbólica tão intensa como a água. Ela é origem da vida e permite a sobrevivência. Porém, quando em excesso, é elemento de destruição e morte; mas é também através dela que o mundo pode regenerar-se, quer material, quer simbolicamente. A água pode ainda ser fonte de saúde, de juventude e de pureza. Neste artigo apresentaremos a luta que as autoridades de Coimbra, quer religiosas, quer civis, travaram para se apropriarem da água. Além disso, poderemos entender a relação, simultaneamente íntima e conflituosa, que a cidade manteve com o seu rio.

None of the four elements of nature inherited from the ancient world has such a symbolic intensity as water. Water is the origin of life and secures survival. However, when in excess, it is an element of destruction and death; but it is also through water that the world can regenerate, either materially or symbolically. Water can also be a source of health, youth and purity. In this article we will present the conflicts between the authorities of Coimbra, religious or civil, about appropriating water. In addition, we may understand the relationship, both intimate and confrontational, the city kept with its river.
