Abstract: The tradition of the Biography as a literary genre developed during the Renaissance under the same rethorical and literary assumptions as in the Classical Age, butjust as then, without a specific treatise that would provide the basic precepts for writing biographical work. The first treatise of this find, De scribendis virorum illustrium vitis sermo, was due to Giovanni Antonio Viperano and was published in Naples in 1609 together with his complete works. It is inspired on works of classic authors like Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch, Cicero, Virgil, Horace, Quintilian, Sueton and others.
