In this paper we analyse the theoretical position of Darwin and his taxonomic uncertainties concerning the problem of the unity versus diversity of mankind, quoting fragments of his own texts. Contrasting with Wallace’s non racist perspective, Darwin found between the human populations of the several continents so deep differences that he hesitated in classifying them as ‘races’ or ‘species’. While the morphological criteria convinced him of the great human diversity, the study of emotions and their expressive mimic masks offered him the evidence of the unity of Man.eng
