Por que não devemos ser representacionistas: a reconciliação de Hilary Putnam com a filosofia da percepção

Abstract

Neste artigo sigo os passos de leituras de história da filosofia da percepção no século xx feitas pelo filósofo americano Hilary Putnam, que acompanham a expressão do seu apoio ao chamado ‘disjuntivismo’ em The Threefold Cord (Putnam 1999). Tais leituras representam ainda o reconhecimento, por parte de Putnam, da importância do problema da percepção para a filosofia. O meu principal objectivo com este percurso histórico guiado por Putnam e, por referência sua, em grande medida centrado em John McDowell, é mostrar o que pode haver de errado com uma determinada forma (a que chamarei ‘representacionista’) de pensar nas relações entre aparência e realidade, uma forma que nos permite aceitar sem mais problemas a plausibilidade de cenários de ilusão global e, em geral, professar uma postura céptica em filosofia.

This article follows the steps of Hilary Putnam’s readings of the history of philosophy of perception in the 20th century, which accompanied his endorsement of disjunctivism in The Threefold Cord (Putnam 1999). Such readings also mark Putnam’s acknowledgement of the importance of the problem of perception for philosophy in general. A further objective of the article is to show – and I take my lead from Putnam’s readings, in particular from his reference to John McDowell’s work – what is wrong with the ‘representationist’ way of thinking about appearance-reality relations, a way which makes for the acceptance, without further questioning, of the intelligibility of global illusion scenarios and in general, for philosophical skepticism.
