Fósseis e a expansão urbana na cidade de Mafra (Santa Catarina – Brasil)

Abstract

The occurrence of fossils in the town of Mafra is known since 1930, with the publication of the first studies, but in the year 1997 the town of Mafra became known in the scenario of the Brazilian paleontology by the conflict occurred with the discovery of an important fossil bed during the excavation works for the installation of a big industry. It was then that the town hall together with the local university discussed and defined the necessary measures for the protection and preservation of this inheritance without damaging the urbane development. Soon after that, the Paleontological Center of the University of the Contestado and the Museum of Earth and Life were created, thus democratizing the scientific knowledge, inserting the community and its leaders in the context of the importance of preservation of this natural inheritance.

A ocorrência de fósseis na cidade de Mafra é conhecida desde 1930, com a publicação dos primeiros trabalhos a respeito, mas no ano de 1997 a cidade de Mafra ficou conhecida no cenário da paleontologia brasileira, em virtude do conflito ocorrido quando da descoberta de uma camada fossilifera durante a terraplanagem para a instalação de uma grande indústria. Foi então que a Municipalidade, juntamente com a Universidade local, discutiu e definiu as medidas necessárias para a proteção e preservação deste patrimônio sem prejudicar o desenvolvimento urbano, sendo também criado o Centro Paleontológico da Universidade do Contestado e o Museu da Terra e da Vida, democratizando assim o conhecimento ciêntífico, inserindo a comunidade e seus gestores no contexto da importância de preservação deste patrimônio natural.
