Farmácia, medicamentos e microbiologia em Miguel Bombarda

Abstract

Miguel Bombarda is a multifaceted figure in the history of Portuguese medicine. Even in his teaching and scientific activity, Miguel Bombarda (known as psychiatrist) had different cares. If we pay attention to the controversy he held in the Medical Science Society of Lisbon and to the work published, we realize that he was aware of the most recent activity in the fields of medicine and sciences of health outside Portugal. In Portugal, Miguel Bombarda was the echo of the most advanced activity that was taking place abroad. He tried to point out the importance of histology and physiology as laboratorial sciences by showing the physiopathological mentality. He also tried to give prominence to etiopathological mentality in Portugal, writing many pieces about Pasteur and his innovations. He held a controversy with Eduardo Abreu in the Medical Science Society of Lisbon about the validity of the anti-rabies vaccine, which he strongly defended. In several texts published, Miguel Bombarda makes an effort to stimulate microbiological experiments and to show the benefits of microbiological discoveries not only in the prevention of illness, but also for the physical robustness of the population. Miguel Bombarda was also aware of the most recent activity in mental disease therapeutics, especially as far as the production of medicines was concerned. If we analyze some of his pieces of writing, as well as the reports he made about Rilhafoles Hospital, we realize that Miguel Bombarda had pharmacotherapeutical cares. Bombarda was conscious of the fact that a true revolution was taking place in pharmacology, and that conscience was revealed in the enormous prudence he had in the use of medicines in Rilhafoles Hospital. It is interesting to analyze the appendix and annexes to the Formulário of medicines in S. José Hospital (which was elaborated with Rilhafoles in mind) as well as the comments made by Miguel Bombarda. Miguel Bombarda tried to combine medicines with the physical therapeutics used until then in the mental patients, a common practice at the time. Powders, capsules, granules, pills, potions, some solutions to be injected, syrup... these are some of the pharmaceutical forms chosen by Bombarda to give the patient active substances that combine products of vegetal origin and products of chemical origin, such as several bromides, camphor, pental, sulphonal, opium by-products, etc… a therapy that essentially included medicines in the therapeutic arsenal. This conference aims at analyzing how Miguel Bombarda was actually aware of microbiological and pharmacotherapeutical questions and their importance to medicine at that time

Miguel Bombarda é uma figura multifacetada da história da medicina portuguesa. Mesmo dentro da sua actividade docente e científica, Miguel Bombarda, conhecido como psiquiatra, teve preocupações diversas. Basta estarmos atentos às polémicas que manteve na Sociedade das Ciências Médicas de Lisboa e às suas publicações para verificarmos que estava consciente do que de mais actual se ia fazendo fora de Portugal nos diversos domínios da medicina e das ciências da saúde. Miguel Bombarda fez eco dentro do país do que de mais avançado se ia fazendo no estrangeiro. Tentou dinamizar a histologia e a fisiologia enquanto ciências laboratoriais dando a conhecer a mentalidade fisiopatológica. Tentou, igualmente, dar projecção em Portugal à mentalidade etiopatológica tendo escrito bastante sobre as inovações pasteurianas e a figura de Pasteur. Manteve polémica na Sociedade das Ciências Médicas de Lisboa com Eduardo Abreu, a propósito da validade da vacinação contra a raiva, da qual era um forte defensor. Em diversos textos publicados, Miguel Bombarda esforça-se por dinamizar a experimentação microbiológica e por dar a entender os benefícios das descobertas microbiológicas não só na prevenção da doença mas também na afirmação da robustez física da população. Miguel Bombarda estava atento, também, ao que de mais actual se fazia na terapêutica das doenças mentais, muito particularmente na produção medicamentosa. Se observarmos alguns dos seus escritos, bem como os relatórios que elaborou sobre o Hospital de Rilhafoles apercebemo-nos que Miguel Bombarda tinha preocupações farmacoterapêuticas. Bombarda tem a consciência de que se operava na farmacologia uma autêntica revolução e essa consciência traduzia-a numa enorme prudência para com a medicação a utilizar no Hospital de Rilhafoles. É interessante avaliarmos o apêndice e seus anexos ao Formulário de medicamentos do Hospital de S. José feito a pensar no Hospital de Rilhafoles e os comentários que Miguel Bombarda teceu. Miguel Bombarda tentou aliar os medicamentos às terapêuticas físicas até então utilizadas nos doentes mentais, como era prática habitual. Pós, cápsulas, grânulos, pílulas, poções, alguns solutos injectáveis, xaropes, são algumas das formas farmacêuticas escolhidas por Bombarda para veicular substâncias activas que conciliam os produtos de origem vegetal e os de origem química como, por exemplo, diversos brometos, a cânfora, derivados do ópio, pental, sulfonal, etc. uma terapêutica que incluía essencialmente medicamentos no arsenal terapêutico. Na presente conferência veremos então como Miguel Bombarda se encontrava bem desperto para as questões microbiológicas e farmacoterapêuticas e para a sua importância para a medicina da época
