Abstract: Inscriptions have always echoed the historical facts that were deemed worthy of being recorded and perpetuated. Nevertheless, it was only after the second half of the 19th century that the epigraphic inscription of toponyms in urban contexts became a habit and a ritual. The establishment of the Republic in Portugal (October 1910) led to the rejection of the monarchical past and the glorifi cation of new heroes and new symbolical dates, which can still be seen today in the urban toponymy of the country.
