Particularidades do parentesco português: a memória do nome de família feminino e a sua outorga aos filhos

Abstract

Este artigo, sobre as particularidades femininas do parentesco português, aborda o lugar da mulher portuguesa na filiação, segundo os modos contrastados do registo civil e da prática rural tradicional. Tal, para evidenciar, por um lado, a diversidade portuguesa da filiação e, por outro, a persistência relativa da memória matronímica da mulher graças às diferentes práticas de outorga do seu nome aos filhos. Como elementos de sustentação destes modelos, o autor demonstra ainda o papel de interdependência entre aqueles e a representação rural da consanguinidade, do tipo de residência matrimonial e da inflexão matrilinear das relações parentais.

This article, focusing on the particularities of Portuguese female kin relations, deals with the role of Portuguese women in descent and filiation, in accordance with differing modes of transmission evident in the Civil Registry and within traditional rural custom. On the one hand, we reveal the diversity of Portuguese descent practices, and on the other, the relative persistence of matronymic memory, thanks to different forms – in various regions of the country – of the transmission of female surnames to children. As elements of support for this model, the author demonstrates the interdependence between these practices and varying rural representations of consanguinity, types of post- -marital residence, and the matrilineal inflection of kin relations.
