Mário Soares e a Europa: retaguarda e horizonte

Abstract

Tendo como referência o pedido de adesão de Portugal às Comunidades Europeias, conduzido pelo I Governo Constitucional após o 25 de Abril de 1974, chefiado por Mário Soares, explora-se os antecedentes europeístas deste socialista, buscando os fundamentos para o papel político e ideológico que a Europa teve no seu percurso. Para isso, recua-se no seu trajeto político até à sua ação de oposição à ditadura. Neste sentido, analisa-se a relação de Soares com a Europa de 1960 a 1976, concluindo-se que a Europa teve simultaneamente um papel de retaguarda, enquanto apoio político, e de horizonte, enquanto projeto de unidade política defensável para um Portugal democrático.

Having in mind the Portuguese accession to the European Communities, signed by the 1st Constitutional Governement after the 25th April 1974, led by Mário Soares, it’s intended to explore the europeism background of this socialist, researching the foundations of the political and ideological role that Europe had in his path. From 1960 to 1976, the relation between Soares and Europe is analysed. The conclusion points out that Europe played simultaneously a background and horizon role, while conceived as a project of political unity suitable for a democratic Portugal.
