The Lives and opinions of Diogenes Laertius is an important source for the study of Presocratic philosophy, in spite of the criticisms that have been made concerning some incongruities and overlaps. In the last few decades his work has been the object of a renewed interest within the field of ancient doxography studies. However, an aspect seems to have been insufficiently considered in studies about this work until now, that of establishing the background of the arrangement by which Diogenes presents the lives and works of philosophers. Is there in Diogenes, beyond a mere doxographical interest, the proposition of a certain ideal of philosophy? In other words, could we perceive in this work something more than a mere rhapsody of lives and doctrines? Our hypothesis is that Diogenes Laertius makes use of their stories to propose a conception of vis philosophica, whose basis would be the coherence between life and thought. In this paper, by focusing on the way he articulates the stories about the lives of philosophers with reports of their deaths, we intend to approach one aspect by which we judge to be possible to understand the design of the author of Lives.eng
