dc.description.abstract | In a passage of The Sophist where Plato exposes the nucleus of some previous philosophical schools (242c), he states that Xenophanes was the pioneer of the Eleatic group. Although Parmenides, well known citizen of Elea, is not mentioned, the expression “Parmenides, disciple of Xenophanes” will prevail thereafter among historians, in spite of the lack of sources testifying the actual presence of Xenophanes in that city. This misconception is sustained by H. Diels in Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker when he talks of the life of Parmenides as presented by Diogenes Laertius. H. Diels uses a manuscript of this author which presents probably a lacuna, and in order to fill this lacuna he adds a conjecture that will attest the presence of Xenophanes in Elea: “<and he [sc. Xenophanes] also was related to the colony of Elea, where he taught>”. Nothing justifies this conjecture (any former editor of the text of Diogenes Laertius has adopted it), but in successive transcriptions of Diels’s text, and specially in translations, the angular brackets are usually omitted, forgetting that it is only a conjecture. The presence of Xenophanes at Elea is therefore attested… by Diels. | eng |
