«Morte no Nilo»: Antínoo: sacrifício, acidente ou assassínio?

Abstract

This essay revisits the death of Antinous, the favourite of the Emperor Hadrian, who drowned in the Nile in 130 AD. In it, we raise the possibility of the death of the young man having not resulted from an accident or an act of magic, as some sustained, but from the imperialist policy of the Prince, who may have seen in his eromenos and in circumstances in which they found themselves (in Egypt at the time of the celebration of Osiris) an opportunity to create a deity with the potential to unite the Empire in the manner of cult of the Emperor, but with a mysteric nature.

Este ensaio revisita a morte de Antínoo, o favorito do imperador Adriano, que se afogou no Nilo em 130 d.C. Nele, coloca‑se a hipótese de a morte do jovem não ter sido consequência de um acidente ou de um acto de magia, como alguns sustentaram, mas sim da política imperialista do Príncipe, que poderá ter visto no seu eromenos e nas circunstâncias em que se encontravam, no Egipto no tempo das celebrações de Osíris, uma oportunidade para criar uma divindade com potencial para unir o Império à maneira do culto do Imperador, mas com um carácter mistérico.
