Scapa Flow 1919: o navalismo germânico e o sistema internacional do pós-guerra

Abstract

O II Império Alemão investiu grande esforço na construção de uma Armada suficientemente poderosa para enfrentar a Home Fleet britânica. Vencedora do ponto de vista táctico, a frota alemã, com excepção dos submarinos, terminou a I GM bloqueada nas suas bases, para vir a ser afundada em 1919 pelas tripulações, em Scapa Flow, onde os Aliados exigiram o seu internamento no cumprimento ambíguo de um dos artigos do Armistício. Este episódio teve consequências que perduraram na Alemanha ao longo do período entre os dois conflitos mundiais, sobretudo a nível político e de planeamento estratégico.

The Second German Empire invested much effort into the construction of an Armada powerful enough to match the British Home Fleet. A winner from the tactical point of view, the German fleet, with the exception of its submarines, ended the First World War confined on their bases. By demand of the Allies in the fulfillment of an ambiguous article of the Armistice, the German fleet was interned at Scapa Flow, and later scuttled by their crews, in 1919. This episode had enduring consequences in Germany, which lasted throughout the period between the two World Wars, mostly at the political and naval planning level.
