As well as Gorgias’ aims in the Encomium of Helene are to rehabilitate the lady’s honnour, those of Plutarch in this youth treatise are to rehabilitate Beotiens’ honnour, who were defamed by Herodotus; but if Gorgias pays attention mainly to Helene’s reasons to leave her husband, Plutarch analyses the rhetorical procedures used by the historian to give free rein to his ill-will against the Greeks. Indeed this rhetorical treatise appears to be a treatise about Rhetoric. The influence of the Sophist on it ist evident at all its levels.eng
