Plutarco y la iconografía monetaria antigua

Abstract

This paper discusses Plutarch’s interest on Greek, Roman and (in some cases) Persian coins. In Moralia and Parallel Lives he sometimes refers to the monetary values and types and to human attitude towards money, but his testimony also evinces his admiration for the coins images and his interest to explain them. Therefore, the passages selected from Plutarch’s works presented in this study are related to the iconography of real ancient coins. In some cases these images function as references to provide an interpretation of deeds and mythical details; sometimes, Plutarch underlines their aesthetic or metaphorical force to characterise the political and moral behaviour of men; and at large, Greek and Roman coins appear to be a secondary but valuable source to understand the biographical selection Plutarch has made of historical materials concerning his heroes.

Este estudio analiza el interés de Plutarco por las monedas griegas, romanas y (eventualmente) persas. En los Moralia y en las Vidas se refiere varias veces a los valores y tipos monetarios, así como a la actitud humana hacia el dinero; pero su testimonio evidencia también su admiración por las imágenes de las monedas y su curiosidad por explicarlas. Se trata, pues, de seleccionar algunos pasajes de las obras de Plutarco que tienen que ver con la iconografía de monedas antiguas reales. En algunos casos estas imágenes funcionan como referencia para interpretar hechos y detalles míticos; a veces Plutarco subraya su fuerza estética o metafórica para caracterizar la actitud política y moral de los hombres; y, en general, las monedas griegas y romanas parecen ser una fuente secundaria, pero estimable, para comprender la selección biográfica que Plutarco ha hecho de los materiales históricos concernientes a sus héroes.
