Abstract

The Business of Being Woman é o título de uma recolha de artigos escritos na viragem para o século XX por uma das primeiras jornalistas americanas. Expressando uma visão conservadora do lugar da mulher na sociedade, os artigos são mais do que uma reacção ao feminismo então emergente: são a expressão dos dilemas de uma mulher no acesso a profissão. Revisitar esta e outras personagens do passado e conhecer as experiências que marcam as raízes das mudanças e continuidades históricas no acesso das mulheres ao jornalismo.

The Business of Being Woman est le titre d'un recueil d'articles écrits lors du tournant vers le XXe siède par une des premières journalistes américaines. The Business of Being Woman is the tide of a collection of articles written at the turn of the nineteenth century by one of the first women to get a place in American journalism. Expressing a conservative vision of a woman's in society, the articles are possibly more than a backlash to feminism: they are the expression of women's dilemmas in their access to a profession. Revisiting her story as well as of other's provides us with the knowledge of the experiences that highlight the historical roots of the changes and continuities in the access of the women to journalism.
