This paper will attempt to prove how film clubs, associations which since the early 20th century tried to gather all of those who to a larger or minor extent were interested in film, nurtured two apparently irreconcilable ambitions: on the one hand to foster cinema as a universal art, and on the other hand to enhance the legitimacy of cinema pursuant to essentially exclusivist aesthetic criterias. Throughout the history of film clubs and their ties with film viewers, we will support the hypothesis that the need for cinema to reassert itself as art is first and foremost due to the fact that it never managed to become culturally independent and to distance itself enough from daily cultural practices and mass culture.eng
