Digitize, democratize: libraries and the future of book

Abstract

Despite a lot of loose talk about the death of the book and the obsolescence of libraries, books and libraries are more important than ever in the current digital environment; and their importance will increase as we design the digital future–if only we can get it right. One way leads through excessive commercialization to a future in which the public will cease to have access to most of the material that belongs in the public domain. Another way is to democratize access to knowledge. The Digital Public Library of America, which went online on April 18, exemplifies the possibilities of democratization. It is a distributed network of digitized collections from research libraries scattered across the U.S., and it aims to make America’s cultural heritage available, free of charge, to all Americans and in fact to everyone in the world.

Apesar de muito se falar sobre o desaparecimento do livro e a consequente obsolescência das bibliotecas, estas são mais importantes que nunca para o ambiente digital atual, e irão aumentar à medida que projetamos o futuro digital – isto é, se as soubermos aproveitar. Um caminho possível aponta para a comercialização excessiva, conduzindo a um futuro em que o público deixará de poder aceder à maioria do material que pertence precisamente ao domínio público. Outra via é a democratização do conhecimento. A Bibiloteca Digital Pública da América, que entrou em funcionamento a 18 de Abril, exemplifica as possibilidades da democratização. É uma rede distribuída de coleções digitalizadas a partir de bibliotecas de pesquisa espalhadas por todo os EUA, tendo como objetivo tornar o património cultural da América disponível, gratuitamente, para todos os americanos e para todo o mundo.
