Problemas de tradução da página 176B6‑7 do Cármides de Platão: ἢν ἐπᾴδειν παρέχῃς Σωκράτει

Abstract

Um dos pontos altos do Cármides, de Platão, encontra‑se na página 176b6‑7, em que Crítias diz ao jovem que dá título ao diálogo que ele deveria entregar‑se ao encantar de Sócrates. Não para que este o encante, no entanto, mas para que a própria psyche alcance, filosoficamente, a temperança que o conduzirá ao processo de cura da enfermidade de cabeça. Essa página do Cármides, por sua vez, tem sofrido traduções, em diversas Línguas Modernas, que desvirtuam o profundo sentido do encantamento filosófico que Platão elabora e sustenta no diálogo. Nesse sentido, será feita, neste trabalho, não uma análise filológica propriamente da página em questão, mas uma análise comparada de traduções em Línguas Portuguesa, Espanhola, Italiana e Inglesa, para que se atenha aos prejuízos e aos acertos da corrente compreensão da página no contexto do diálogo.

One of the highlights of Plato´s Charmides can be found on page 176b6‑7, when Critias tells the young man, whom the dialogue is named after, that he should surrender to Socrates’ enchantment. However, this is not done in order to actually enchant him, but for his own psyche to reach, in a philosophical sense, the temperance that will lead him to the healing process for the infirmity in his head. This page in the Charmides, in turn, has undergone translations in several modern languages, which distort the deep sense of the philosophical enchantment that Plato establishes and maintains in the dialogue. Thus, this paper is not supposed to be a true philological analysis of the page in question, but a comparative analysis of translations in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and English, in order to draw attention to the impediments and the accuracies of the current understanding of the page regarding the dialogue.
