Uma família, uma cidade e um Império na encruzilhada religiosa: a propósito da introdução da Epístola a Leta 1-2 de S. Jerónimo (Belém, 402)

Abstract

Os dois primeiros parágrafos da Epístola a Leta, de S. Jerónimo, constituem, como ele próprio reconhece, um desvio ou um excurso face à motivação principal da carta, que é a de instruir uma mãe na educação ascética da sua filha. A comemoração do nascimento da pequena Paula para a vida ascética é o ponto de partida para o comentário do momento histórico de Roma e para um testemunho acerca da transformação das mentalidades e das formas de persuasão do cristianismo associadas às dinâmicas familiares. O artigo pretende analisar o valor testemunhal e a interpretação de Jerónimo acerca da história do momento religioso do império, que abrem uma luz sobre os processos de cristianização da aristocracia romana por meio da intimidade familiar.

The first two paragraphs of the Epistle to Leta, of St. Jerome, constitute, as he recognizes, a deviation or an excursus regarding the main motivation of the text, which is to instruct a mother in the ascetic education of her daughter. The introductory subjects, despite the provocative and light style cultivated by St. Jerome, reveals a powerful connection with the historical moment, the transformation of mentalities and the persuasion mechanisms within the family dynamics, placed at the origin of the Christianization of the Roman Empire. This paper analyzes the testimonial value of the Jeronimian speech about the religious status of the Empire, but also wishes to highlight the discursive choices that denounce the Jeronimian bias on interpretation of the facts.
