Coimbra e o imaginário

Abstract

No final do século XIX e no início do século XX, criou-se em torno de Coimbra um rico imaginário bucólico, tardo-romântico, categorizado numa tranquilidade e numa pureza quase intemporais. O objectivo do presente artigo é analisar historicamente esse imaginário e observar a sua conversão numa espécie de paradigma nacional. Para o efeito, usam-se textos de Eça de Queirós, Alberto de Oliveira e Miguel Torga, bem como uma vasta literatura constituída por memórias (nomeadamente académicas), romances, discursos, ensaios, guias e relatos de viagem, diários, poesia e alusões circunstanciais. Salienta-se a persistente oposição entre coimbrismo e anticoimbrismo e o modo como os elogios tardo-românticos de Coimbra continuam a justificar algumas acusações de conservadorismo. A interpretação daqui resultante é utilizada para explicar aparentes contradições na recepção crítica da cidade universitária construída durante o Estado Novo.

At the end of the nineteenth- and beginning of the twentieth-centuries, a late, rich, bucolic and romantic imaginary emerged. It was additionally categorized as being endlessly imbued with tranquility and purity. The aim of this essay is, therefore, to analyze this imaginary from a historical point of view and observe how it evolved into a kind of national paradigm. For this purpose, texts written by Eça de Queirós, Alberto de Oliveira and Miguel Torga will be used as well as a wide range of writings constituted by memories (mainly academic), novels, discourses, essays, guides and travel writings, diaries, poetry and occasional allusions. The persistent opposition between coimbrismo and anticoimbrismo are also highlighted here as well as the way in which late romantic apologies persist in justifying some of the accusations of conservatism. The interpretation gathered here is, thus, utilized in order to explain the apparent contradictions inherent in the critical reception of this university town built during Salazar’s Estado Novo.
