Horace’s Ars Poetica approaches Plato’s Symposium because it integrates satyr drama into the very composition of the text, with the presence of satyrs (half‑man, half goat creatures) establishing the connection between tragedy and comedy. The dialogue, being closest to theater, presents characters as Aristophanes, Agathon and Socrates: comedy, tragedy and the Satyr / Eros. Horace takes up the same dramatic triad describing the ideal satyr drama, without tragic or comic extremes, but the intermediary between two extremes, reforming the dramatic poetic according to his style and Augustus’s politics.eng
