The new digital environment, the growth of social media influence and the possibility each person has to produce and disseminate information at a large scale represent the elements that refocus the practice of journalism. This paper starts from the present context in which the profession is practised to understand how such transformations are changing the practice and understanding of journalism, as well as its business model. We endeavour to understand if the new ecological processes of media communication strengthen or weaken journalism’s function, or if journalism, as we know it, is changing or is on the brink of extinction. Supported by theories of authors such as Pavlik (2014), Bradshaw (2014) Rost (2014), Kovach & Rosenstiel (2004), Neveu (2005), Nichols & McChesney (2013), Deuze (2008), Sebastião (2012) and Baldissera (2008) among others, we try to understand the new paths of journalism, and its weaknesses, considering the strategic actions of organized sources with the means to influence News coverage.eng
