Vocación cartográfica de un militar profesional: Coello de Portugal

Abstract

Este artículo comienza por mostrar el origen portugués del personaje y, siguiendo una línea la biográfica –filogenética y ontogenética– muestra a un Francisco Coello de Portugal como militar profesional acreditado y mostrando, también, una clara vocación de geógrafo y cartógrafo. La producción de cartografía en la que participó activamente le dieron gran prestigio y, prestigiosas instituciones pidieron su colaboración; todas le abrieron sus puertas.

This paper begins by showing the Portuguese origins of a personality and, following a biographical line of analysis – phylogenetic and ontogenetic – shows Francisco Coello de Portugal as a reputable and professional military man who also showed a clear vocation for geography and cartography. The production of cartography, in which he actively participated, gave him a great prestige and renowned institutions requested his collaboration and opened their doors to him.
