Porto de Mós em tempos medievais

Abstract

Neste artigo, o autor considera a relevância da vila de Porto de Mós, situada geograficamente no maciço calcário estremenho, na história medieval de Portugal. Avalia-se a fundação do município por D. Afonso Henriques e a questão da autenticidade da figura de D. Fuas Roupinho, seu primeiro alcaide, elucidando-se, ainda, o posicionamento viário estratégico da vila, a exploração dos seus recursos económicos, os seus senhorios institucionais e o papel de imigrantes provençais e de judeus no tecido social portomosense.

This paper focuses on the relevant part played by the town of Porto de Mós – geographically located on the lime massif of Estremadura – in the Medieval history of Portugal. It assesses the consecration of the municipality by King Afonso Henriques and the issue on the authenticity of D. Fuas Roupinho, the town’s first mayor. Furthermore, it clarifies the town’s strategic positioning in terms of the road network, the exploration of its economic resources, its institutional landlords and the role of the Provencal immigrants and Jews in the social fabric of Porto de Mós.
