Abstract: This article analyses the evolution of the land transport system in Macao, from the traditional chairs and the typical rickshaws to the advent of the automobile and of public transportation. The characteristics of the Macanese streets, the high density of population and circulation in the commercial areas and the introduction of automobile transport led to very critical reactions regarding the new automobile era emerging at the time. However, within a decade only (1916- -1926), the appeal of this new means of transport became irresistible, with a growing adhesion to it. The cars, used mainly as entertainment, were followed by utilitarian and accessible transports for the less wealthy, with the introduction and considerable development of public transportation in the 1920s.
