As it was produced by Athenian poets for Athenian audiences, and subsidized by the Athenian government, it is not surprising that Greek tragedy contains, in diverse voices, an encomium of the city that provides its context. Its role was indeed political in an etymological sense, because it is inspired by the city’s experiences and conscious of its own didactic role as counsellor of the citizens. This is why Greek tragedy, besides its always critical attention toward the city’s life throughout the 5th century BC – a period both of substantial political turmoil and of intellectual change - adopted an encomiastic style as well, adjusting to an Athens which sought to impose upon the Greek world an image of superiority.eng
