De Alexandria às bibliotecas digitais

Abstract

This article aims to give a historical overview of libraries from Classical Antiquity, namely those from the Middle East, Greece and Rome to modern times, more specifically digital libraries. By analyzing the history of “protolibraries” we can see that the ancients had the consciousness of book preservation, just as modern libraries also have, which currently, based on technology, offer us a wide range of possibilities in the preservation and treatment of the book. We present, as well, an overview on digital libraries and projects that have been developed in the field of Classical Studies and Humanities in general, and how they contribute to the spreading of scientific culture in these areas.

Pretende este artigo mostrar um panorama histórico das bibliotecas desde a Antiguidade Clássica, nomeadamente as do Médio Oriente, as gregas e as romanas, passando pelas bibliotecas modernas, especificamente as digitais. Ao analisarmos a história das protobibliotecas podemos verificar que os antigos tinham consciência da preservação do livro, tal como o têm as bibliotecas modernas, que atualmente, com base na tecnologia, nos oferecem um vasto número de possibilidades na preservação e tratamento do livro. Apresentamos, assim, uma visão sobre as bibliotecas e projetos digitais que foram desenvolvidos na área dos Estudos Clássicos e das Humanidades em geral, e de que modo contribuem para a difusão da cultura científica nestas áreas.
