In this paper the author tries to point out the limits of an interpretation in psychological key about Helen’s character in Euripides’ homonymous tragedy. Faced with such an approach, she suggests the characterization without the own expectations of naturalistic theatre and watch the whole work as a spectacle aimed at the emotions of the audience rather than their intellect. Instead of asking ourselves who or how Helen is in psychological key, we must discover how it is expressed through her in pathetic key the dichotomy between reality and appearance that runs through the work. Moreover, the author outlines what has been the trajectory of the character in subsequent Western literature.eng
