The recent publication of a new papyrus of Euripides provides fascinating insights into Euripides’ Ino, a play admired by Plutarch, but which had been almost completely lost. In the new text, from towards the end of the drama, a child recently killed by his maddened father is brought on stage to be lamented by his parents. As well as depicting a scene of high pathos, the papyrus allows us to make inferences about the shaping of Euripides’ play as a whole, and to appreciate its artistry; it moreover allows deductions about its performance history.eng
