O Poenulus de Plauto e o seu tempo

Abstract

In the Poenulus of Plautus we find implicit or explicit references to the Punic Wars and other conflicts relating to Greece and Eastern Mediterranean. The historical events mirrored in the play enable us to realize how Plautus uses arguments of contemporary politics in the captatio of the audience, and how the playwright’s spectators would understand the Roman foreign policy. Surprisingly in a play represented within the time of Hannibal’s life, the Carthaginian Hanno is not merely dealt with clichés associated by the Romans to Carthaginians, but proves to be a significantly more complex character.

No Poenulus de Plauto encontramos referências implícitas ou explícitas às Guerras Púnicas e aos conflitos relativos à Grécia e ao Mediterrâneo Oriental. Os acontecimentos históricos espelhados na peça permitem-nos perceber o modo como Plauto usa argumentos da política contemporânea na captatio do público, e a forma como a política externa romana seria entendida pelo auditório do dramaturgo. Contra o que seria de esperar numa peça ainda representada em vida de Aníbal, o cartaginês Hanão não é simplesmente conotado com os lugares-comuns associados aos Cartagineses, mas revela-se uma personagem significativamente mais complexa.
