Contos e prantos da memória sertaneja sobre os rituais fúnebres nas décadas de 30 a 60 do século XX

Abstract

Dialogamos e discutimos a memória de velhas sertanejas da Paraíba e do Rio Grande do Norte (Brasil) sobre a morte e suas representações nos rituais de sepultamento da primeira e início da segunda metade do século XX. Anotamos das narrativas de memória lugares e papeis sociais para com a morte, nomeadamente nos rituais de cuidado com os corpos, nos cortejos fúnebres e no trabalho do luto. Evidenciamos a construção de sociabilidades em torno do morrer que implicavam atitudes forjadas para com a própria vida, entendendo que a morte nesse período poderia ser representada em uma ruptura estranha ou em uma familiaridade contínua.

We dialogued with and discussed the memory of older countryside women from Paraiba and Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) about death and its representations in burial rituals in the first and beginning of the second half of the 20th century. We noted from the narratives of memories, places and social roles towards death, especially in the care rituals of the bodies, the funeral and the work of mourning. We show the construction of sociabilities around the death that involved forged attitudes toward life itself, understanding that death in this period could be represented as a strange break or with a continuous familiarity.
