A cegueira e as narrativas silenciadas: contornando os obstáculos, enfrentando o estigma

Abstract

Focusing on blindness, indubitably an important sensorial limitation, this paper aims to formulate and reflect on the multiple questions that this issue raises, taking as a central reference the persuasive suggestion of the persistence and vitality of a "personal tragedy narrative" (Oliver, 1990). This narrative is identified and unveiled here as a conceptual base in the production and reproduction of an insidious social imagery on blindness and blind persons. Grounded in ethnographic experience with the Associação dos Cegos e Amblíopes de Portugal (ACAPO), I propose to evaluate the implications resulting from the vitality of that hegemonic grammar. A grammar which is hardly sensitive to the lives and the reflexivity of blind persons, particularly, in the way it succeeds in operating as a regime of truth, in terms of the economic, social and political constraints it imposes. Instigated by the powerful disparity engendered here, I set out to experience and grasp what is there of empowerment and resistance in the associative discourse of blind people. With the support of a white cane, the epistemological route I propose to take seeks to introduce the inescapable pertinence of the incorporeal character of every experience as an extension of the cultural grounding of the physical body.

Gravitando em torno da cegueira, sem dúvida uma importante limitação sensorial, procura-se constituir neste espaço uma reflexão que permita aceder aos múltiplos questionamentos que esta temática suscita, tomando-se como referência a persuasão da persistência e vitalidade de uma “narrativa da tragédia pessoal” (Oliver, 1990). Esta narrativa é aqui identificada e desvelada como suporte conceptual na produção e re-produção de um insidioso imaginário social sobre a cegueira e as pessoas cegas. Fundado numa experiencia etnográfica junto da Associação dos Cegos e Amblíopes de Portugal (ACAPO), pretendo pulsar as implicações decorrentes da vitalidade dessa gramática hegemónica pouco sensível às vivências e a reflexividade das pessoas cegas, em particular, no modo como vinga em operar enquanto um regime de verdade nos constrangimentos económicos, sociais e políticos que impõe. Instigado pela disparidade forte que daqui resulta, invisto-me em aquilatar o que de resistente e capacitante emerge do discurso associativista das pessoas cegas, num percurso que proponho desbravar invocando o auxílio de uma bengala branca e no qual procurarei introduzir a incontornável pertinência do carácter incorpóreo da toda experiência enquanto extensão de uma leitura culturalmente contextualizada do corpo físico.
