O iberismo político medieval e a bula Manifestis probatum como marco jurídico de divisão

Abstract

Procura regressar-se às raízes medievais do iberismo político onde se situa o longo percurso, nem sempre pacífico, da supremacia e hegemonia de Castela sobre os outros reinos, assim como o longínquo e problemático processo da separação definitiva e jurídica de Portugal. Reino já independente, construído pela vontade política de um povo, conseguiu, por fim, erguer no seu caminho, um marco jurídico divisório, a bula Manifestis probatum, de 1179, que reconhece e assinala, internacionalmente, a sua independência. Mas são muitas as questões levantadas sobre o aparecimento bastante tardio, do diploma pontifício. Que facto novo, determinante, provocou a expedição de tão notável documento pela suprema autoridade de então, a Sé Apostólica, e que razões presidiram para a sua concessão repetida aos sucessores do Io rei de Portugal? São algumas das várias questões em presença sobre as quais, de novo, se tenta reflectir.

A return to the medieval roots of political Iberianism is aimed at, centred on the long and not always peaceful course of the supremacy and hegemony of Castile over the other kingdoms, as well as the remote and problematic process of Portugal's definitive and juridical separation. An independent kingdom, built by the political will of a people, succeeded in eventually erecting on its path a dividing juridical landmark, the Bull Manifestis probatum of 1179, whereby the country's independence is internationally recognised and marked. Many were the issues raised by the belated appearance of the pontifical document. What might have been the decisive new fact that led the Holy See, the highest authority at the time, to issue such a remarkable text? What might have been the reasons that presided over its repeated concession to the successors of the first king of Portugal? These are some of the questions that the present study aims to reflect upon.
