Abstract: What is most interesting about the humanistic translations of the Moralia from a philological perspective is the presence of conjectural solutions – representing a real auctoritas for emendatio – and of exegetical proposals which allow us to trace back to the Humanistic age some interpretations that are considered hallmarks of modern philology, signaling the presence of textual corruption, thus expressions whose meaning must already have been puzzling to Humanist scholars. Two passages from Bruta animalia ratione uti and a third from De sollertia animalium, the most assiduous of the writings that the intellectual of Chaeronaea devoted zoopsychology, provide examples of the close relationship linking modern exegesis to the Humanists’ interpretations.
