Abstract

Isaac Abravanel foi um dos mais representativos judeus portugueses de todos os tempos pela notável actividade intelectual, social e financeira que desenvolveu em Portugal, Espanha e Itália. Tesoureiro-mor no reinado de D. Afonso V e depois dos Reis católicos, epistológrafo e autor de comentários bíblicos, e homem de negócios, Abravanel revelou uma dimensão superior que o colocou ao nível dos melhores do seu tempo. Os seus conhecimentos humanísticos e bíblicos e a sua concepção do Estado e do messianismo judaico caracterizam a obra que deixou e que ainda hoje é objecto de estudo por parte dos investigadores.

Isaac Abravanel was one of most representative Portuguese Jews of all times for the remarkable intellectual, social and financial activity he carried out in Portugal, Spain and Italy. Chief Treasurer under King Afonso V and the Catholic Kings, epistolographer, and the author of biblical commentaries as well as businessman, Abravanel proved to be on a par with the best intellectuals of his time. His humanist and biblical knowledge and his notion of the State and Jewish messianism are the distinctive features of his work, which remains the subject of study for researchers.
