Da Ibéria à Hispânia, da Espanha à Ibéria

Abstract

As actuáis denominações de Península Ibérica ou Península Hispânica, atribuídas ao território mais ocidental do continente europeu, derivam dos nomes fixados para o mesmo território pelos Gregos (Ibéria) ou Romanos (Hispânia). É do nome romano da Península {Hispania), que deriva Espanha, o lexema que passaria a identificar este espaço geográfico até ao século XVIII. Nesse século, e sobretudo no seguinte, perante a consolidação da divisão da Península em dois estados independentes, um dos quais se apropriara do nome outrora outorgado à totalidade peninsular, sente-se a necessidade de encontrar um outro nome para o conjunto da Península. E assim se regressa à designação de Ibéria.

The current designations of Iberian Peninsula or Hispanic Peninsula attributed to the westernmost territory of the European continent are derived from the names established for the same territory by the Greek (Iberia) or the Romans (Hispania). It is from the Roman name of the Peninsula (Hispania) that Spain is derived, the lexeme that would identify this geographic space until the 18th century. In the 18th century and especially in the 19th century, in the face of the consolidation of the partition of the Peninsula into two independent states, one of which had appropriated the name previously granted to the peninsular entirety, the need was felt for another name to be found for the whole of the Peninsula; hence the designation of Iberia.
