Irredentismos ibéricos: acerca de sobreposições territoriais reais e imaginárias (séculos XIX e XX)

Abstract

A Península Ibérica, como região histórica, caracteriza-se pela coexistência de longa data de dois Estados nacionais, Espanha e Portugal, que têm mantido fronteiras estáveis desde o fim da Idade Moderna. Embora não existam situações comparáveis de áreas fronteiriças sobrepostas na Europa central de leste, a questão de Olivença e as tensões entre os projectos iberistas e a perspectiva que os nacionalistas espanhóis têm de Portugal como uma parte perdida da nação hispânica puseram em causa as narrativas nacionais de ambos os estados nações. O irredentismo espanhol sobre Gibraltar constituiu outro exemplo. Contudo, a dimensão ibérica das narrativas de identidade esteve interligada à consolidação dos projectos nacionais alternativos na Galiza, no País Basco e na Catalunha, que encaravam Portugal como um possível correspondente.

The Iberian peninsula as a historical region is characterized by the long standing coexistence of two national States, Spain and Portugal, that have maintained stable borders since the end of the early modern period. Although no comparable situations to the overlapping frontier areas in East-Central Europe emerged, the question of Olivença and the tensions between Iberianist projects and the Spanish nationalists' view of Portugal as a lost part of the Hispanic Nation questioned the national narratives of both nation-states. Spanish irredentism over Gibraltar was another example. However, the Iberian dimension of identity narratives was also intertwined with the consolidation of alternative nationalist projects in Galicia, the Basque Country and Catalonia, that also looked at Portugal as a possible counterpart.
