Title: | La alianza luso-española entre el General Delgado y el gobierno de la Republica en el exilio | Other Titles: | The Luso-Spanish alliance between General Delgado and the exiled government of the Republic | Authors: | Sánchez Cervelló, Josep | Issue Date: | 2010 | Publisher: | Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra | Abstract: | La Alianza Luso-Español fue consecuencia de la convergencia de la
The Luso-Spanish Alliance was the consequence of the convergence of the institutional part of the Republican exile, which already headed the alliance since the end of the Civil War, with the Portuguese sectors that, under the inspiration of General Delgado, had left the country after the fraudulent presidential elections of 1958. The Iberian opposing cooperation was possible due to the growing radicalization of the Republican exile, after the Spanish dictatorship joined the UN in 1955, allowing for the tactical coincidence with the traditional "pustchismo reviralhista" of that sector of the Portuguese opposition. The common project was strengthened by the insurgent success of Fidel Castro, who took over power in Cuba in 1959. It was with this backdrop that the creation of DRIL and the Attack on the Santa Maria occurred. The Alliance failed to be functional and Delgado soon discovered the Republican divide; at the same time, disagreements led by H. Galvao sprang within the party. Moreover, the assassination of the "fearless General" permanently damaged the project. |
