dc.description.abstract | After a brief analysis of the Byzantine military literature concerning warfare, this article aims to elucidate two main problems connected to it: (1) Why did texts on military matters produced in the Graeco-Roman world continue to be written in Byzantium but not in the contemporaneous Latin West?; (2) What was the social and cultural context that allowed the production of military treatises to be continued in Byzantium? The answer to the first question is related to the different degree of complexity that characterized warfare in Byzantium and in the medieval West from the 6th to the 11th century; the answer to the second question can be found in the peculiar social structure of the early and middle Byzantine Empire. The role played by the imperial power in governing society according to notions of hierarchy, order and care for its subjects was paralleled by ideas of tactics, strategy and intelligent use of human resources which can be found in the military treatises. It was not by accident that the weakening of the imperial power in Byzantium, toward the end of the 11th century, coincided with the end of the production of military treatises. | eng |
