En el nombre de Dios: la ideología de la guerra en la Península Ibérica medieval: siglos XI-XIII

Abstract

Entre os sécs. XI e XIII, teve lugar na Península Ibérica um confronto militar de largo alcance entre os reinos cristãos do Norte e os estados muçulmanos do Sul. Neste contexto, cada uma das partes envolvidas fez uso de um conjunto de recursos ideológicos que, em boa medida, se basearam em argumentos e em noções de natureza religiosa: os cristãos justificaram, legitimaram e causaram a guerra contra o Islão apelando a ideias relacionadas com a guerra santa, a cruzada e a reconquista; os muçulmanos, pelo seu lado, fizeram-no através da yihad. Para todos eles, combater em nome de Deus converteu-se num recurso ideológico que cumpria funções sociais importantes, as quais são analisadas neste texto.

Between the 11th and the 13th centuries, the Iberian Peninsula was the stage of a large-scale military confrontation between the Christian kingdoms of the North and the Muslim states of the South. In this context, both parties made use of a number of ideological resources that were, to a significant extent, based on religious arguments and concepts: the Christians justified, legitimized and provoked the war against Islam by invoking ideas related to the holy war, the crusade and the reconquest; the Muslims, in turn, called upon the Jihad. For all of them, fighting in the name of God became an ideological resource that fulfilled important social functions, which will be analyzed in this text.
