As Guerras da Restauração, entre 1643 e 1665, na correspondência de Filipe IV com Soror Maria de Jesus de Ágreda

Abstract

A correspondência epistolar entre a mística Soror Maria de Jesus de Ágreda e o rei Filipe IV, ao longo de duas décadas, cobriu o período das guerras da Restauração em quase toda a sua duração. Para além de reflectir uma vincada mentalidade providencialista e um sentido profundo de culpabilidade e de insegurança da parte do monarca, acompanha as vicissitudes do conflito e revela também as reacções de Filipe IV e da religiosa, como imagem duma patriota identificada com o seu povo, bem como o evoluir dos acontecimentos - chave ligados à beligerância entre os dois países e certos eventos diplomáticos do contexto europeu da época. Aqui reside a importância da análise feita a este intercâmbio que só no fim dos séculos XIX foi tornado público.

The epistolary correspondence between the mystic Sister Maria de Jesus de Ágreda and King Philip IV throughout two decades covered nearly the whole period of the Restoration wars. In addition to reflecting the king's strong providentialist mentality and a profound sense of guilt and insecurity, the letters describe the vicissitudes of the conflict and reveal the reactions of Philip IV and of the nun, who appears as a patriot identified with her people. They also mention the evolution of key events connected to the war between Spain and Portugal and certain diplomatic events of the European context of that time. Here lies the importance of the analysis made to this exchange that was only made public at the end of the nineteenth century.
