Abstract

Esboço de um livro a fazer, "O Perfil" percorre a actividade política de Frei Francisco de S. Luís. Este fez o seu aprendizado coadjuvando o Geral dos beneditinos e seguindo a história do Reino e da Europa nos claustros e na Coimbra universitária. Revela-se, pela primeira vez, em situação real tumultuária na resistência contra os franceses em 1808. Conselheiro da sua Ordem nos anos difíceis que precedem a Revolução de 1820, afirma-se como governante enquanto membro do Governo saído dessa Revolução e como Regente. Bate-se por um liberalismo moderado, reitora com êxito a Universidade. Sagra-se como parlamentar, tal como será entre 1826 e 1828, em 1834-1836 e ainda em 1839, passando sempre pela presidência. Ocupa episodicamente a pasta do Reino. Antes estivera seis anos encarcerado pelos miguelistas. O político defensor da Carta Constitucional anti-setembrista e anti-cabralista, persiste quando Patriarca de Lisboa, onde como sempre estuda a história e a cultura portuguesa, os direitos da Igreja lusitana no Oriente, o relacionamento com a Santa Sé, o cumprimento pelo clero e pelos católicos das suas obrigações evangélicas, os excessos da ingerência do Poder no âmbito clerical. Evidenciou-se como homem da cultura, parlamentar respeitado, influente nos bastidores e como sacerdote católico liberal, mas cismontano e racionalista, símbolo da transição da ilustração para o liberalismo, que muito ajudou a cimentar.

The draft of a book to be written, this article covers the political activity of Friar Francisco de S. Luis. He did his apprenticeship as coadjutor of the President Abbott of the Benedictines and followed the history of the Kingdom and of Europe in the cloisters and at the University of Coimbra. He reveals himself, for the first time, in a quite tumultuous situation in the resistance against the French in 1808. Counsellor of his Order during the difficult years preceding the Revolution of 1820, he asserts himself as ruler while member of the Government that came out of that Revolution and as regent. He fights for a moderate liberalism. He is a successful rector of the University. He is a member of parliament in 1826-1828, in 1834-1836 and in 1839, assuming also its presidency. After being imprisoned by the Miguelistas for six years, he episodically occupies the position of minister of the Kingdom. Political supporter of the anti-setembrista and anti-cabralista Constitutional Charter, he is named to the Patriarchate of Lisbon, where he continues to analyse Portuguese history and culture, the rights of the Lusitanian Church in the Orient, the relationship with the Holy See, the compliance of the clergy and the Catholics with their evangelical obligations, and the excesses of the interference of political power in clerical matters. He was known as a man of culture, a respected member of parliament, as an influential person behind the scenes and as a liberal catholic priest - but within a cismontanist and rationalist tradition -, a symbol of the transition to liberalism which he helped to consolidate.
